This exercise tells the candidates they are welcome to express themselves and are expected to bring their unique identities to work, while also enabling the interviewers to glimpse the more personal, authentic side of potential hires instead of finding that out six months into the job.
Seek Diversity
The challenge of working together can draw out the potential in each person that is just below the surface, and having more ideas that contribute to the creative stew is more likely to lead to success. Our workplaces today are increasingly virtual environments, where people of diverse cultures, backgrounds, ages, experiences, and ideas work together.
Diversity is the mark of great creative teams, where differences are strengths, not weaknesses. The five people who composed the comedy group Monty Python were very different people, but they had a process where their differences added up to something that was more than the sum of the parts.
While diversity can bring great energy to teams, it will only work in a nurturing, fostering environment where each individual has free expression, free access to information, and the freedom to think and fail. No idea is forbidden from expression, since ideas that are seemingly unworkable or that seem off track may lead to a different approach that solves the problem at hand or may be a solution for a problem or opportunity that has yet to be considered.
Sometimes sharing the worst, most absurd ideas levels the playing field, enabling individuals who are more reluctant to share their thoughts for fear of failure to do so. In a truly collaborative environment, success is shared along with failure. Employees in such companies are emboldened to challenge assumptions and, through collaboration, the individual members stretch their cognitive abilities and grow.
